Project 3 Proposal

For Project 3 I will create a digital archive of the role of photography in social movements in America.  With an interest in photography and social change, the combination and incorporation of both was one that I knew I wanted to create an archive about.  Starting with photos from the late 1800s and working throughout history until the present day, my project will be an archive of photos that are most relevant to political and social movements. As I look at the digital archive I have found photographs from the civil war, protest of other wars, civil rights movement, and labor reform movement.  These will be the photos that I will primarily use because they come from the source that allows me to upload directly to WordPress.  Finding others will not be difficult and hopefully accessible through other Northeastern databases.  Because of the nature of the project, my archive will have a very image oriented design with text to supplement.  I do not anticipate difficulty in formatting it because generally the photos flow well together and I have been able to create similar visually appealing website pages in the past.  I could include a timeline of the most important movements in American history and will start looking at the most important dates now. I hope to show that photography can be used for many purposes aside from art.  It can inspire change, rally people, and lead to real improvements. My intended audience includes people who care about photography and were unaware of its historical impacts, people who care about social reform and were unaware of photography’s role throughout hundreds of movements, and those who knew about the relationship between both and enjoy learning more about those photographs.
