For Project 3, I would like to do a project about rap artists and the typical stereotypes that are associated with them. This would likely be specifically about how a large part of rap content out there is mainly coming from small, up and coming SoundCloud artists who don’t have as much of a viewer base as an artist that you would listen to on the radio would. While there are still mainstream rappers that you would hear on the radio, like Drake or Kanye, this only provides a small insight to what rap as a genre really is. I personally liked this project idea because oftentimes there is a lot of assumptions surrounding certain music genres, such much that saying something like “I usually listen to rap” can be met with a knee-jerk reaction of aversion. Even when my friends ask me what type of music I listen to, I have to make sure that I explain what type of rap I like if I know that they’re not really fans of the genre in the first place. By educating people with my project, I hope to dissolve any stereotypes that people may have about rap music so that they can understand or even like the genre a little better than before. As a result, I would probably aim to keep a relatively serious tone throughout my project so that people can understand that I am trying to make a point, though at the same time, humor can help captivate my target audience. Lastly, I think a timeline could be helpful to show the recent uptick in development of rap and how it has changed since it first became a major genre.
